Difference Between Mattop and Tabletop Chain

 The primary function of a FlatTop Chain is to transport products from one point to another. It is used to convey, transfer, accumulate, meter, elevate, and lower items of varying sizes and shapes.

 

Conveyor Types

 

Products can be transported using various methods, including gravity, belt, roller, skate wheel, air, industrial chain, spiral conveyors, and flat top chains.

 

- Belt Conveyors

Belt conveyors consist of a head and tail pulley with a belt stretched between them. Take-up devices maintain belt tension, enabling the pulleys to drive the belt via friction. The belt may slide on a steel surface or run on rollers. However, belts are subject to wear, stretching, and tracking issues, making repairs or replacement time-consuming.

 

- Roller and Skate Wheel Conveyors

These conveyors can be gravity-based or powered, with rollers rotating on bearings. Uneven or damaged rollers may cause an inconsistent surface, potentially harming products. Additionally, the complexity and high component count of roller conveyors increase maintenance costs and require stocking various spare parts.

 

- Air Conveyors

Air conveyors use air pressure to move products, commonly lightweight items like PET bottles. Containers are guided by adjustable guiderails while air pressure propels them. However, air conveyors are limited to specific product types and sizes.

 

- Flat Top Conveyor Chains

Flat top chains operate similarly to belts but offer several advantages in handling containers and packages. They are versatile, capable of conveying, transferring, accumulating, metering, elevating, and lowering items of various sizes and shapes.

Types of Flat Top Style Chain

 

Flat top chains come in two types: TableTop and MatTop Chain. While their basic functions are the same, they differ in design and application.

 

- TableTop Chains

TableTop chains resemble a door hinge with attached wings. They are molded in standard widths ranging from 3.25 to 12 inches and typically shipped in ten-foot sections.

 

- MatTop Chains

MatTop chains, also called plastic modular chains, can be almost any width and are assembled via "bricked" construction, accommodating widths up to 20 feet. Some MatTop styles are available as "molded-to-width" (MTW) in standard sizes similar to TableTop chains. Certain MTW MatTop chains feature Positrack tabs for improved side-tracking, similar to TableTop chains.

 

Applications

Narrow TableTop chains and MTW MatTop chains are suitable for single-file conveyance. Wider TableTop chains in multiple lanes or wide MatTop chains in single strands are used for mass flow.

 

TableTop Chain Types

 

TableTop chains come in two styles: straight running and side-flexing, with two construction types: one-piece and two-piece.

 

- One-Piece Construction

These chains consist of unit links connected by a pin, similar to a door hinge. Polymeric chains, a variation of the one-piece design, are plastic counterparts to metal-engineered chains. They are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and available in both straight-running and side-flexing styles.

 

- Two-Piece Construction

Designed to combine the strength of a roller base chain with the flat surface of a TableTop link, this type provides added strength and enables longer conveyors compared to one-piece chains.

 

- Special Variations

Multiflex chains, often called "knuckle chains," feature a unique link, pivot, and pin design, allowing them to flex around tight corners and navigate inclines or declines. They are commonly used in alpine systems for accumulating products.

 

MatTop Chain Types

 

MatTop chains are typically made from plastic materials and come in various surface styles to suit specific conveying needs.

 

- Surface Styles:

- Solid Top: Ideal for general conveying applications requiring a flat surface.

- Perforated or Open Area: Features small or large openings to allow air or water flow, suitable for washdown applications like rinsing produce.

- Raised Rib: Designed for use with "Finger Transfer" combs, where the fingers fit between the ribs for smooth transfers, similar to escalator transitions.

- Textured Top: Includes nubs or raised patterns to prevent products from sticking or to enhance grip in people-moving applications, reducing the risk of slipping.
